Two 24-pounder guns c. 1790's. (The age of the pieces is estimated by their design features. They have no markings other than serial numbers and weight markings.) One is in "fair" condition and the other in "poor" condition. These are "brothers" of the five at Fort Adams in Newport, RI. They were removed from Fort Adams sometime in the 1980's. Both are painted but severely pitten due to rust. There is also one 3-inch 50-caliber Naval gun, Mark 22 Mod 0, dated 1942 in the same location.

J64-172220History of the Park (1896 - 1960's)
Originally named Nantasket Head Military Reservation until 1900.
Endicott batteries here were Battery Ripley (1901 - 1943) buried and built over, Battery Field (1900 - 1917) partially destroyed and buried, Battery Sanders (1906 - 1943), Battery Pope (1906 - 1917), and AMTB Battery 941 (1943 - 1946) which was destroyed and buried.
A three-gun AA battery was built in 1936.
A 36-inch searchlight was mounted atop the water tower from 1916 - 1929.
Fire-control towers were built at Point Allerton (1907 no remains, 1922 burned in 1926, 1928 demolished 1978, two in 1942, one still exists, other demolished 1978) and Strawberry Hill (1907, 1942 both still exist).
Became a NIKE missile control site in 1955.
First located here was Patriot Allerton Battery, or Fort Independence (1) (1776 - 1782) (different from the one on Castle Island).
It was occupied by French Marines in 1778 and 1782.
Parts of that five-bastioned earthwork fort still remain here on Farina Road. It was never used during the War of 1812.
